UKCA Marking
October 4, 2021
Outline
-
Due to the UK's withdrawal from the EU, the UKCA mark will be applied instead of the conventional CE mark to distribute in the UK (England, Wales and Scotland) except for Northern Ireland. The UKCA marking is started applying from January 1, 2021, it must be applied from January 1, 2023.
At this time, the requirements, conformity assessment process, and standards of the UKCA Marking are almost the same as the CE Marking, and as with the CE Marking, Technical Documentation, Declaration of Conformity, and other documents will need to be prepared and stored.
Directive and Regulation
While the CE marking in the EU stipulates the regulations for each product category by the EU Directive (Directive), the UKCA marking stipulates the regulations for each product category by the Regulation.
<Relationship between EU directives and UK legislations (typical example)>
EU DIRECTIVES | UK LEGISLATION | ||
---|---|---|---|
Directive | Directive No. | Legislation | Legislation No. |
Electromagnetic compatibility Directive | 2014/30/EU | The Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016 | 2016 No.1091 |
Low voltage Directive | 2014/35/EU | The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 | 2016 No.1101 |
Equipment for explosive atmospheres (ATEX) Directive | 2014/34/EU | The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2016 | 2016 No.1107 |
Radio equipment Directive | 2014/53/EU | The Radio Equipment Regulations 2017 | 2017 No.1206 |
Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment Directive | 2011/65/EU | The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012 | 2012 No.3032 |
Harmonized Standards and Designated Standards
While the CE marking in the EU, uses the "Harmonized Standards", called "EN standards" to estimate conformity to the requirements of each directive, UKCA marking in the UK uses "BS EN Standards" called "Designated Standards". (However, the EN standard in the EU and the BS EN standard in the UK are virtually identical.)
